VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING PROGRAMME

Volunteer Roles:

  1. Registered Trainer
  2. Registered Listener

Listen Well Scotland is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our small but growing committed team. We are particularly looking for individuals who are passionate about the importance of listening and want to help us continue to make a positive contribution to health and wellbeing in Scotland through our listening training and one to one listening service – Listening Time4U.

Listen Well Scotland is committed to ensuring the integrity and standard of both its training and practice and so is willing to provide our training free of charge to those who are accepted on our national volunteer training programme.

Acceptance on any Listen Well Scotland funded volunteer training programme will require an application form to be completed (available on request) followed by a short interview.

Volunteers who wish to become Trainers or Registered Listeners are required to complete our training programme which consists of the two-day Foundation Course and five-day Advanced Course. Although not essential, we would encourage volunteers to consider embarking on the components required to gain credits for completing these courses (additional practical and written assessment). All intending to become Trainers and Listeners, however, will be assessed on their listening skills at the end of the Advanced Course.

All volunteers are also expected to attend a local Practice and Development Group which provides support, supervision and ongoing training.

To ensure Listen Well Scotland can sustain its service delivery volunteers are required to commit to 2 years following training (unless any unforeseen circumstances arise.)

If volunteers decide for some reason they do not wish to complete the 2-year commitment, Listen Well Scotland will expect the cost of the training to be repaid. (£780)

Dates for the next Recruitment and Training programme are listed below.

To become a Registered Listener able to deliver Listening Time4U – our one to one listening service – will require further listening practice and development, with an assessment at 4 months and 6 months following completion of the Advanced Course. Registered Listeners providing Listening Time4U will also be covered by our Professional Indemnity Insurance.

Working together with others in Listen Well Scotland, Registered Listeners will be encouraged to explore and identify local community settings in which Listening Time4U will be offered e.g. Schools, GP surgeries, Family Life Centres or partnership with another Third Sector organisation.

If the volunteer role involves working in a school context acceptance as a Registered Listener will be subject to a satisfactory PVG Scheme Record Check for regulated work with children.

Volunteers will also receive an Induction before beginning their role as a volunteer.

Listen Well Scotland took the decision that the focus of our work over the next 3 – 5 years will be the wellbeing of young people. We are therefore particularly looking for volunteers interested in working in schools either as a Listener offering Listening Time4U or as a Trainer delivering our Listen Well Course for pupils and our Get Listening! Course for teachers.

For this next Recruitment and Training Programme we need to recruit Listeners for Mid and East Lothian and Trainers for the central belt of Scotland.
