Welcome to the Christmas ’18 edition of our quarterly newsletter – Listening Matters!
Since our last newsletter we have been extremely busy across Scotland.
3 schools in Inverness, Nairn and Stirling have completed the Listen Well Course with 44 young people gaining the Listen Well award. The course will have given them the transferable life skill of active listening, improving peer communication and making a positive impact on mental wellbeing.
We have also trained the staff of a school in Ayrshire which supports young people with special needs.
Our Get Listening Course has been delivered to 4 organisations in Ardeonaig, Glasgow, Elgin and Edinburgh further resourcing them for their specific work.
Lastly two Effective Listening Foundation Courses were run in Falkirk and Stirling.
Our one to one Listening service is now being delivered in 7 schools in Scotland in Inverness, Moray (2), Midlothian(2), East Lothian and South Lanarkshire.
Listening Time 4U continues to be delivered for adults in several community settings including a GP surgery.
An initial meeting was held in October in Perth of our new Development Group formed to consider strategic planning for Listen Well Scotland over the next 3 – 5 years and ensuring a sustainable future both operationally and financially.
As with many Third Sector organisations securing funding remains a real challenge. Despite various funding applications having been submitted we have not yet found core funding, which makes it very difficult to develop our services and plan for the future.
THE MENTAL HEALTH OF YOUNG PEOPLE continues to make alarming headlines on an almost daily basis. Listen Well Scotland is confident it can make a positive impact on mental wellbeing of young people. We will continue in our commitment to explore potential funding opportunities while maintaining the best possible service we can within the present financial constraints.
NEW TRAINING INITIATIVE FOR P7 PUPILS
Listen Well Scotland is in the final stages of developing their new listening training course for P7 pupils in readiness for delivery in the middle of 2019.

Listen Well Scotland will once again be exhibiting at The Gathering in the SECC in Glasgow on the 20th & 21st February ’19 **STAND 114**
For the first time we will also be hosting an hour long event entitled
** “Get Listening for Mental Wellbeing!” **
At this event Listen Well Scotland will share how their listening training programme and one to one listening service Listening Time4U are being used to address the mental wellbeing of young people within schools and their vision for the focus of their work over the next 3 – 5years.
This event will provide participants with an opportunity to slow down in the busyness of the day and consider whether the environment in which they work encourages a listening culture.
The event will be interactive and experiential.
EXCITING NEW PARTNERSHIP
Listen Well Scotland is delighted to be able to announce that a new partnership with the University of the Highlands and Islands(UHI) is well under way.
The partnership will bring together their considerable expertise in digital health initiatives with our experience of delivering listening training and one to one listening, with the aim of producing innovative ways of enhancing our whole service delivery. This will involve the use of commercial digital media tools online, virtual reality storytelling and therapy strategies to increase the reach and level of participation in the courses in both rural and urban populations.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES and VOLUNTEERS
We are pleased to announce that 2 new members will be joining the Board in the new year. We are also pleased that a new volunteer administrative officer for the central belt will be joining the team. Further details will appear on our website shortly.
